Saddle Up for the 2025 Colville Pro Rodeo: A Northwest Tradition Rides Again
The PRCA is proud to present the 2025 Colville Pro Rodeo, bringing world-class rodeo action to the heart of Washington's northeast corner
When the summer sun begins to warm the rolling hills of northeastern Washington, the community of Colville prepares for its most anticipated event of the year. The Colville Pro Rodeo, sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), will thunder back into town on June 13-14, 2025, transforming the Northeast Washington Fairgrounds into an arena of western excellence and tradition.
A Rodeo Steeped in Community Spirit
For generations, the Colville Pro Rodeo has been more than just a sporting event—it's a celebration of western heritage that brings together competitors and spectators from across the Columbia Basin and beyond. As a PRCA-sanctioned event with a $12,000 purse, this rodeo attracts top talent while maintaining the hometown feel that makes it special.
"What makes Colville unique is how the entire community rallies around this event," says Jake Thompson, a PRCA announcer who's called many a ride at this venue. "From the moment you drive into town, you can feel the excitement building. Storefronts decorate with western themes, locals sport their best boots and hats, and there's a genuine pride in hosting one of the Northwest Circuit's favorite stops."
World-Class Competition in Washington's Northeast Corner
The 2025 edition promises two action-packed days of PRCA-sanctioned competition. Cowboys and cowgirls will battle it out across seven classic events, each showcasing different aspects of traditional ranch skills transformed into modern competitive sports.
Roughstock Events
The crowd-pleasing roughstock events will have spectators on the edge of their seats:
Bull Riding: Often called the "most dangerous eight seconds in sports," bull riding pits determined cowboys against powerful, spinning bulls weighing up to 2,000 pounds. Riders must stay aboard for eight seconds using only one hand gripping a flat braided rope, while their free hand must not touch the bull, themselves, or the equipment.
Bareback Riding: This event demands incredible upper body strength as riders grip a rigging resembling a suitcase handle while their legs kick in rhythm with the horse's bucking motion. The more powerful and athletic the horse's bucking performance, the more opportunity for the cowboy to demonstrate his riding ability and earn higher scores.
Saddle Bronc Riding: Known as rodeo's classic event, saddle bronc riding evolved directly from the task of breaking wild horses for ranch work. With its roots in the Old West, this event requires precise timing, balance, and core strength as riders synchronize their movements with the horse's bucking pattern.
Timed Events
The precision and speed of the timed events showcase the practical skills developed on working ranches:
Steer Wrestling: Also known as "bulldogging," this event requires cowboys to leap from horseback onto a running steer, using strength and leverage to bring the animal to a halt and lay it on its side—all in mere seconds.
Tie-Down Roping: A demonstration of a working ranch skill where calves are caught and secured for branding or medical treatment. Cowboys must rope a calf from horseback, dismount, run to the calf, throw it by hand, and tie any three legs together with a pigging string.
Team Roping: The only true team event in professional rodeo requires precise coordination between two mounted ropers—the "header" who ropes the steer's horns and the "heeler" who ropes the steer's hind legs. This event evolved from ranch work when two ropers were needed to handle larger cattle.
Barrel Racing: Speed and agility take center stage as cowgirls and their horses navigate a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels. With mere hundredths of a second often separating competitors, this Women's Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) event combines horsemanship, strategy, and pure adrenaline.
Beyond the Competition: A Full Western Experience
The Colville Pro Rodeo delivers more than just competition—it's a complete western experience that begins the moment you enter the fairgrounds.
Entertainment That Keeps You on the Edge of Your Seat
Between competitive events, fans will be treated to the antics of a professional rodeo clown who serves the dual purpose of entertaining the crowd and protecting fallen riders from charging bulls. The 2025 rodeo will feature a yet-to-be-announced specialty act that promises to dazzle audiences with horsemanship skills and comedy.
Local musical talent will provide authentic western atmosphere throughout the event, with a featured performance scheduled after Saturday's competition for those looking to kick up their heels under the Washington sky.
Vendors and Activities for the Whole Family
The rodeo grounds will host numerous vendors offering everything from western wear and handcrafted leather goods to unique jewelry and artwork. Food vendors will serve up rodeo favorites from barbecue to funnel cakes, ensuring no one goes hungry while enjoying the action.
For younger fans, a dedicated kids' area will offer face painting, mechanical bull rides scaled for smaller cowboys and cowgirls, and educational demonstrations about rodeo events and western heritage.

Seating Tips from the Pros
For first-time attendees wondering about the best seats in the house, PRCA announcer Jake Thompson offers this advice: "If you want to be close to the action, sections A through C put you right near the chutes where you can feel the thunder of hooves and see the determination on competitors' faces. For families with young children, the upper sections provide excellent viewing while being a bit removed from the dust and noise."
Getting There: Logistics Made Easy
The Northeast Washington Fairgrounds is located at 317 W Astor Ave in Colville, Washington. Free parking is available on-site, with designated accessible parking spaces for those with appropriate placards.

A Tradition of Excellence
The Colville Pro Rodeo's relationship with the PRCA ensures competitors and spectators alike experience rodeo at its finest. As a sanctioned event on the Northwest Circuit, points earned here count toward qualification for the Circuit Finals and potentially the National Finals Rodeo—rodeo's ultimate championship.
"We're proud to bring PRCA-caliber competition to Colville," says Circuit Director Tom Wilson. "This rodeo has built a reputation for excellent stock, fair competition, and some of the most knowledgeable fans in the Northwest. It's a highlight of our circuit every year."
