High Desert Stampede: Where Western Tradition Meets Central Oregon Grit

PRCA-sanctioned rodeo returns to Redmond for its thrilling 2025 edition

When the spring winds begin to sweep across the high desert plateau of Central Oregon, rodeo fans know it's time for one of the region's most anticipated western traditions—the High Desert Stampede. Set for April 2, 2025, at the First Interstate Bank Center in Redmond, this PRCA-sanctioned event promises to deliver the perfect blend of world-class competition, family entertainment, and authentic western heritage that has made it a cornerstone of the Columbia River Circuit.

A Tradition of Excellence in the High Desert

The High Desert Stampede has established itself as more than just a rodeo—it's become a celebration of the western way of life that continues to thrive in Central Oregon. As a proud member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association since 2026, this event has grown from humble beginnings to become one of the premier early-season stops for competitors looking to build momentum toward the National Finals Rodeo.

"What makes the High Desert Stampede special is how it honors the authentic traditions of rodeo while creating an electric atmosphere that appeals to everyone—from die-hard rodeo fans to families experiencing their first bucking bronc," says the event's organizer. "We've worked hard to create an event that showcases the incredible athleticism of these cowboys and cowgirls while keeping the spirit of western heritage alive."

World-Class Competition Comes to Redmond

With $20,000 in prize money on the line, the High Desert Stampede attracts top talent from across the country. Competitors will test their skills in seven action-packed events that form the backbone of professional rodeo:

Bareback Riding — Perhaps the most physically demanding event in rodeo, bareback riders grip a simple handhold while their broncs twist, turn, and launch into the air. Points are awarded for both the rider's technique and the horse's performance.

Steer Wrestling — Also known as "bulldogging," this event showcases pure strength and precision timing as cowboys leap from horseback onto a running steer, using technique and leverage to bring the animal to the ground.

Team Roping — The only true team event in professional rodeo, featuring a "header" who ropes the steer's horns and a "heeler" who captures the hind legs. Success depends on perfect coordination between the ropers and their horses.

Saddle Bronc Riding — Often called rodeo's classic event, saddle bronc riding evolved directly from the task of breaking wild horses for ranch work. Riders must maintain perfect form for eight seconds while their mount does everything possible to dislodge them.

Tie-Down Roping — A demonstration of precision and speed, where cowboys must rope a calf, dismount, and tie three of its legs together in the shortest possible time.

Barrel Racing — The premier women's event in professional rodeo, featuring cowgirls and their horses navigating a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels at breakneck speeds where hundredths of a second can separate champions from the pack.

Bull Riding — The most dangerous eight seconds in sports. Bull riders attempt to stay aboard 2,000 pounds of twisting, bucking muscle and horn, with only a flat-braided rope for support.

The younger set won't be left out of the action, as the popular Mutton Bustin' competition gives children their own chance at rodeo glory, attempting to ride wooly sheep in a scaled-down version of bull riding that never fails to bring the crowd to its feet.

A Full Day of Western Entertainment

While the competitive events form the heart of the High Desert Stampede, the day's entertainment extends far beyond the arena action. Special performances, including trick riders and musical acts, will keep the energy high between events.

"We've designed the High Desert Stampede to be more than just a sporting event—it's a full day of western entertainment," explains the event coordinator. "From the moment the gates open until the last bull ride of the evening, there's always something happening that celebrates our western heritage."

Pre-rodeo activities will begin well before the main performance, giving attendees the chance to explore vendor booths, enjoy western-themed entertainment, and even meet some of the competitors. After the final event, the celebration continues with live music and dancing for those looking to extend their High Desert Stampede experience into the evening.
